Some stories from our lives stay with us forever. Others slip through the cracks of memory. In this class, you'll learn techniques to recall meaningful stories and fill in details you may have forgotten. The very act of writing, prompted by specific creative writing exercises, can help us remember. We'll use memory, imagination, and other creative writing prompts and techniques to help you develop new material and enrich your works in progress, creating memorable characters, vivid scenes and engaging stories. For all levels, this class includes instruction, writing and feedback.

Introduction to Personal Essay
Wednesday, June 23, 3 - 5 p.m. in Mill Valley.

Our lives are rich sources for personal essays, stories and memoir. This class focuses on shaping our material into engaging, finished pieces and provides an excellent foundation for the ongoing weekly classes. It’s ideal for beginning and more experienced writers who want to learn more about the elements of personal essays, from leads and angles to epiphanies and endings.

Writing on the Road: A Workshop at SFMOMA
Tuesday, June 29, 10 - 1 p.m.
Cost: $105 if paid by June 15; $135 after that.
Museum ticket additional.

When it's time to write outside the box, venture out the door. From the canals of Venice to a mall near home, writing in the moment has vitality and specificity that makes readers feel they're in the scene. Learn how to take notes and do writing on the spot, wherever you are, then transform it into memoir, fiction and articles. We'll start with a short class in the Museum Cafe, write in the galleries, using SFMOMA's collection to prompt our stories and open our imaginations, then gather at the Roof Garden Café for class discussion. You're welcome to stay for a free docent tour following class.

Writing From the Senses
Saturday, July 24, 10 - 4 p.m. at Green Gulch Farm, Muir Beach.
Contact Green Gulch to register. 415.383.3134.

Using all five senses when we write can bring us into the present moment, awaken awareness, and make our writing come alive. In this one-day retreat, delightful sensory prompts will help us tap into an endless source of fascinating material, enriching memory and story with imagery and detail. We'll have instruction, creative writing exercises and feedback, both indoors and in the garden. You'll never have to stare at a blank page, computer screen or crumbs on the carpet again, when you use all your senses and the writing techniques presented in this workshop. For all levels.

Get Into Print
Saturday, July 31, 1 - 4 in Mill Valley.

This practical "How to" workshop will give you the tools you need to get your writing published in magazines, newspapers and other media. We'll look at where to send your work, how to get editors to read your submissions (and accept them!), writer's guidelines from various publications, when to send query letters and when to send completed pieces, cover letters that work, snail mail vs. email, how to format your piece for submission, and more.
